Clowne Cross Country 8 March

No doubt I will find myself talking about the weather and the sludge factor before I finish this final Captain's report for 2009 but I want to begin by saying WELL DONE.  Well done to everyone who ran, turned out to cheer or washed the gear afterwards we did it, a clean sweep for the club winning the ladies, mens and overall trophies.  What a superb start to the clubs 20th year anniversary celebrations.  Special thanks go to Rose Barnes who provided an excellent photographic record of the effort everyone put in to completing the courses and to Alan and Ann Chambers for the organisation of numbers and generating the results on the day.

But now back to the day itself - it became quite clear early that morning that sun cream wasn't going to be required and my dream of being known as 'captain weather' was gone.  The weather was 'not nice' wet, breezy and cold.  Even my shoes were giving false sudge factor readings there was parts which were high on the sludge scale but my shoes remained firmly on my feet. Out of 121 runners 43 were Kestrels, 28 men and 15 women an excellent turn despite the re-arranged date, special thanks to all those who re-arranged working shifts to be there.

Don't forget we will be able to do it all again next year ...........yes the sludge, the brambles, the stiles and whatever the weather throws at us.  So if you missed out watch this space and get your club colours and join in the cross country fun in 2010

Captain’s Cross Country Report

Retford 1 March

The weather for this year’s cross country series just keeps getting better and the sun was out for us at Retford.  (If the trend continues we will need sun cream for 8 March).  Conditions underfoot were the best I have ever known (ok not as much experience as some but believe you me my experience of Retford has been nothing but mud, mud and more mud) on the sludge scale definitely came in medium/low .  Only lost one shoe once but there was suction when retrieving it.  The sterling efforts of everyone on the day meant that the club retained its overall first position.  Out of the 130 runners 42 were Killamarsh Kestrels 26 men and 16 women.

The finish is in sight and we are in a good position to bring home the spoils but we need to put in the final effort at Clowne on the 8th March. So come on Kestrels get your club colours on and join in.

Captains Report

Cross Country Report – 18th January Handsworth/ 1st Febuary Killamarsh

What a magnificent start to the 2009 cross country series and of course the club’s 20th anniversary year.

At Handsworth on the 18th January the sun was shining and the temperature was not too bad, in fact positively balmy for the hardier types.  Conditions under foot probably best described as sludgy in places but low on the sludge scale measured on the fact I didn’t lose my shoes once.

Out of the 149 runners 54 were Killamarsh Kestrels 18 ladies and 36 men.  In addition to the runners we had quite a number of supporters there to cheer the team in.  The team’s efforts certainly paid off with the ladies team winning their event and the men coming in a close second behind Handsworth.  .

At Killamarsh again the weather was not too bad ok a little bit cold but the threatened snow stayed away.  Out of the 157 runners 63 were Killamarsh Kestrels 23 ladies and 40 men.  Despite the cold the marshals and supporters were out in force, and in good voice, encouraging everyone on to the finish.  Conditions underfoot was mixed, some parts of the route a breeze other parts, well lost my shoe once, so on the sludge scale that is definitely muddy.  Again the team’s efforts were rewarded with a first place for the ladies and a second place for the men.

LONDON MARATHON TRIP 2007

(guess who & please fill in the blanks)

Two giddy girls arrive at Oldcotes for a 10am DIRECT trip to London.  We already planned to have a glass of wine in hand by 2pm at the latest.  That was until our driver decided to stop at a service station for 45 minutes. An unlicensed service station at that!  To pass the time one of us sat in the massage chair ‘for a laugh’.

After driving round and round and round London we finally arrive at 3:15pm.  Hotel was fab and fortunately just a 5 minutes walk from All Bar One.  Fortunately because, by 7:30pm and 3.5 bottles of wine later, neither of us was in a fit state to walk much further.

Sometime between 7 and 8 we got back to our hotel. One of us can’t remember how we got there!!

Sometime before 8, one of us was sick!!!!  The other can’t remember them being so, even though the sick one pushed the other out of the way of the sink in the process!!

At around 1am one of us woke to turn the lights out!!

Next morning neither of us could manage breakfast and the mere mention of milk in coffee made the sick one start again.

We both use only one contact lens, both of which are in identical pots in the bathroom – side by side.  Not a problem we thought as both use strength 2.75.  That is until one of us puts the lens in, and then finds that one of us has +2.75 and she has -2.75  - result is ‘blind as a bat’.

Off we go at about 11am to the Custom House Exhibition where last year we picked up our race numbers.  The train journey was difficult, we had to think and if that wasn’t enough we had to travel on a hot crowded train for around 20 minutes.  Once there we shuffled around trying to look as if we felt ok.  We must be good actors, because we were asked if we were running tomorrow!!  By 1 o’clock we gave in and went to the pub.  Did we have more Pinot Grigio – not a chance!  Burger, chips and a pint of pop each and how much better did we feel after that.

Back on that train and off to the Tower Thistle.  A bit of soap-star spotting was needed.  We sat there, in the bar and ordered a glass of  rosế and  at last we felt ok and were back on track. Our star spotting resulted in us seeing Bob Hope from Emmerdale and Sally Gunnel.

Later that day we were to meet our club runners at Ask restaurant in Paddington.  Off we go, get in the taxi and guess what, he wants an address.  Have we got one – have we heck!!  So we look for a phone to ring Jane, no phone – out we get and back we go to collect our phone, oops no room key!! Taxi clock ticking away - things can only get better.  £22 later we arrive at Spring Street, Paddington.

We have a brilliant night out, service is shocking but food is good.  Had a drink but just a couple and off we go to negotiate the tube for our return journey.  All goes well until we try to join the Jubilee Line – Closed for essential maintenance!!!!  So a bit of a walk back to Tooley Street and we arrive at our hotel at 11pm for a good nights sleep.

Sunday is a relief. We both woke feeling well and hungry and off we go for our big breakfast.

By 10am we are on Tower Bridge watching the first of the runners go by.  We are in T shirt vests and as warm as toast and oh so grateful for my being born in 1956 rather than 1957 as when we ran London it was to celebrate my 50th.

The sun shone, Colin Jackson drew our attention and we almost missed Jess and Jane as they ran past in a real good time.  After 2.5 hours on the bridge we set off to the 25 mile point to look for them again.

The runners deserve more than a medal for their efforts on this occasion.  It was boiling and tiring just walking, watching and cheering.

We found a place close to the end where we could wait to cheer on Jess & Jane as they approached the finish.  Yet again we almost missed them.  In my excitement, when I did see Jane I shouted the wrong name !!! Go Jess Go!!  I can’t even do the cheering bit right!   Still, I’m sure neither of them minded at that point and were just glad to be getting to the finish line – although we’re told the last few metres of the run were the hardest.

We’d both like to thank you all for making our weekend break such fun.  Any time you want some wine drinking supporters just let us know!!!
